Alfonso Teenage Shenanigans We had tremendous fun together as teenagers; cars and girls at the time were our focus. Take, for example, the time when we thought we had come of age, so we decided to rent a car to take our girlfriends out on a date. How excited we felt, until fate intervened when we became involved in a minor accident while test driving the rented car. It spoiled all our plans; the outing was aborted, but we found a way to console ourselves, even as we thought up all the lies we could feed our extremely vexed girlfriends who had been so looking forward to the outing. Then came after A/Levels final examinations, and we decided to stay in school a few more days before finally departing for our individual homes. During this period, we and a couple of other guys drove around town aimlessly with one of our mates who had brought his father’s car to the school to collect his things. We returned that evening, only to be confronted by a rather aggressive school security guard who accused us of driving dangerously around campus earlier in the day. The following day, we were paraded before the Headmaster, who admonished us all. Our punishment was that we couldn’t travel that summer as planned, but we found ways to amuse ourselves. We have also learned that great friendship is dependent on great respect for each other. 56 The Birthday Journal
