W A R R E N H U G H E S April The man on the Zoom platform was not almost ninety as we had been told; he was probably in his mid-seventies. Or so we thought. It turned out he was! Which was amazing. Reminiscing on that interview with Warren Hughes, we note that several things stood out, among which was his knack for remembering things, even in their littlest detail, was most striking for us. “I was born in Washington DC on April 16th, 1933. My forceps had slipped during childbirth, creating a facial nerve palsy; one that would leave me unable to blink and completely close my right eye for life. There were nine of us, which was good in a way because there was always someone to talk to. However, there were negatives too; we were always hungry.” Also outstanding are his recollections of the 1940s American recession. On December 7, 1941, at eight years old, I was reading a comic when it was announced over the radio that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, thrusting America into World War II.
