I met Maa Yaa Yaa at church, and not long after, she invited me to her home — a place that has since become like my own. She has been so welcoming and heart-warming. Beyond her biological children, Maa Yaa Yaa (AuntieMonica) has lovingly embraced and nurtured countless children—myself included as her “firstborn.” At times, it is difficult to tell the difference between her biological children and the many she has taken under her wing. I will never forget her familiar question, “Kwaku, wo nhwɛ?” One unforgettable moment was when I told her I was about to start a relationship with my wife. She smiled and said, “Kwaku, wo nhwɛ? Mewɔ hɔ ma wo.” True to her word, she has stood by me and my family through every stage of our journey. Maa Yaa Yaa has always been supportive, compassionate, and loyal — qualities that make her truly special. I still smile remembering the moment when Chief returned from the UK, and Daddy humorously remarked, “I expected you to bring books and not gadgets.”Moments like that reflect the warmth and humour that fill her home. Your life, Maa Yaa Yaa, is a beautiful tapestry of love, kindness, and strength. Through every season, you have been a guiding light — always there, always caring, always giving, and always loving. Eight decades of grace, wisdom, and generosity have touched more lives than you will ever know, and your legacy of compassion continues to inspire all who know you. As you celebrate this milestone, may you feel the deep gratitude of all those whose lives you’ve enriched. You are cherished beyond words, and your legacy of compassion will continue to inspire generations. Here’s to your radiant spirit, your gentle heart, and the joy you bring to the world. May this chapter be filled with peace, laughter, and the love you so freely give. Happy Birthday to you, Monica “Yaa Yaa” Frimpomaa Asante! Kwaku Adusei Acheampong The Birthday Journal 87
