Monica 80 Magazine

I first met AuntieMonica nearly forty years ago at the KNUSTMaternityWard in Kumasi. From that very day, her warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on me. Depending on the moment, I call herMaa, Auntie Yaa Yaa, or AuntieMonica — each name carrying its own closeness and affection. Maa is God-fearing, amazing, and disciplined. AuntieMonica is caring, supportive, and dependable in both good and difficult times. Her compassion and strength have inspired me and my family to love deeply and stand firmly for one another. She lives her faith quietly but firmly, inspires everyone around her, and carries herself with a sense of purpose that shines through in all she does. She often says, “Manko a enyɛ,” and unbeknownst to her, she’s made it her signature phrase — and true to her words, she always shows up. When I was knocked down by the passing of my dear mother and beloved husband in 2021 and 2022 respectively, her deep care and boundless enthusiasm toward me, my children, and my siblings were — and continue to be — beyond imagination. Words can hardly describe! I remember a day when she saw a naked woman lying helplessly on the streets of Ahinsan in Kumasi. Without a second thought, she went home, picked up something to cover her, and returned to help. That moment taught me a powerful lesson— that we must always be our brother’s and sister’s keeper. Her heart responds instantly to those in need. She also has a lighthearted side. She often asks me to take photos of her — especially on Sundays after church. It has become a sweet little ritual that never fails to make me smile. I’ve never had any misunderstandings with her, but I’ve admired how she handles the occasional disagreement with others. I learned from her as she navigated a fewmisunderstandings with others that every relationshipmay have moments of disagreement. Each time, her humility and willingness to make peace remind me that love and understanding are stronger than pride, and it has only deepened my respect and affection for her. Thank you, AuntieMonica, for your unwavering love, wisdom, care, and support in both the bright and stormy seasons of my life. Your presence in my life has been a true blessing. I am deeply grateful! Happy 80th Birthday to the most amazing woman! May your days continue to be filled with good health, laughter, and God’s abundant blessings. You are deeply loved, AuntieMonica, today and always.
