Our journey together began at the USTHospital in September 1973. I don’t remember that day, of course, because I had just been born. You were also at the hospital to give birth to your troublesome son and my good friend, Nana Poku. AuntieMonica, you embody quiet strength, unwavering calm, profound love, and thoughtfulness. AfterMr Asante’s passing, your resilience was on display to the world, single-handedly raising your children into prominent and respected citizens and parents. One of my favourite memories of you is your warm smile, which is deeply embracing and always makes everyone feel welcome. Every encounter with you has been pleasant, and from you, I learned to be respectful and cheerful towards everyone. I honestly cannot think of anyone having a misunderstanding with you. You are calm, loving, and thoughtful. If I could thank you for just one thing, it would be for being a beautiful mother to all of us. AuntieMonica, I am blessed to have you in my life. The world celebrates with you on your 80th birthday. You taught us to turn every challenge into grace and every moment into a memory worth keeping — and to do it all with a beautiful smile. From that moment, I have always known you as a loving and caring presence, someone who gives advice with a kind heart. I always remember that warm smile you give whenever you see me — it never fails to brighten my day. I’ll never forget the time you came to my shop and disciplined my shop assistant. She changed for good. And of course, the funny moment when I jokingly told you I would bring a cane for you to beat me with for failing a promise.
