I first met AuntieMonica when I was about 10 years old. We had just moved to Kumasi fromAccra, and her husband, Uncle Yaw, and my dad were both in the Department of Land Economy at the then University of Science and Technology. Over the years, AuntieMonica has been such an approachable, cheerful, and caring lady. She was always there for us campus kids, offering motherly advice and making us feel welcome no matter how often we went in and out of her home. She was just fun to be around. I always smile when I remember the day she visited me and David at Nhyiaeso and cooked her lovely jollof in my kitchen. I once heard her say that rather than throwing a party for her birthday, she preferred to organize gifts for a children’s home. For her, being a blessing to others has always mattered more than her own comfort. I would thank her for always being there for others in their moments of need. AuntieMonica, we love and adore you. We wish you a birthday filled with joy, pleasant surprises, and all the blessings God has in store for you. Happy, happy 80th birthday! Isty Korboe My very first encounter with AuntieMonica was when I went to her residence withMr. Kwaku Adusei Acheampong to treat her big black dog, “Danger.” Since then, we have formed an everlasting friendship, both personally and at the KNUST Chaplaincy. I affectionately call herMaa Monica, Nana One, or Nana Baakop3 (though her queenship extends only as far as the Chaplaincy). AuntieMonica is caring, generous, loving, humble, and always frank. She has a strong passion for helping the poor and needy, but she ensures that assistance goes to those who are willing to work hard, pursue education, or be accountable. One of my favourite memories is how serious and committed she is to any work she undertakes. She always puts her heart into it and encourages everyone around her to do the same. She often says, “A struggling man and a struggling woman.” When I was about to get married and faced challenges with my stepmother turning my dad against me, it was Auntie Monica who stepped in. She took on the role of a mother, ensuring everything went perfectly and that I had everything I needed. I also fondly remember how she would tell the story of her husband not liking food stored in the refrigerator. She’d cook in large quantities and add different ingredients each time to make it taste new. The way she narrated it always made me laugh. If I were to describe her in three words, they would be: Humble, Kindhearted, and Counsellor. I appreciate you so much, Maa Monica (Nana Baakop3) — “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” May God continue to bless you abundantly. Congratulations on your 80th birthday! I thank God for your life and the kindness you’ve shown over the years. You are truly a blessing, and I am deeply grateful for you. Wishing you a wonderful birthday filled with love, joy, and many more years of God’s goodness and favour. Hurray!!! Mrs Juliana (Kusi) Agyei Berkoh 112 The Birthday Journal
