I first met Maa many years ago at her home inNhyiaeso during Chief ’s graduation party. From that very day, I could tell she was a true mother — someone who instantly made everyone feel welcome and at home. I affectionately call her Yaa Yaa. She is the true definition of grace and service — deeply God-fearing, kind, and endlessly giving. Her compassion, especially the way she lovingly cares for my mum, inspires my whole family. She serves quietly but wholeheartedly, reminding us every day what it means to live a life of faith and love. One phrase of hers that I will never forget is, “Nyame a yesom no nti oooo” — “It’s because of the God we serve.” That simple sentence captures who she is. Everything she does — every act of kindness, every smile —flows from her deep love for God. Her devotion to my ailing mum has touched me profoundly. She visits her often, stays with her for hours, and always calls to check in and give me updates. Through her, I’ve learned that real love shows up — it’s steady, patient, and full of care. We’ve also shared many light-hearted moments. AnytimeMaa sees me in one of my flowy dresses —which we both adore — she’ll say with a playful smile, “Maame, ɛbɛkɔ me nti fa brɛ me!” (“It will fit me, so bring it to me!”)We always laugh about it, and it’s one of those small, joyful memories that I truly treasure. I recall when an upset AuntieMonica responded to my call because I didn’t check up on her when I got to Kumasi… Me: Maa, maakye ooo… Yaayaa: Me nkye biaa, me nkye biaa… ɛdeɛ ben? She even made a joke in her response. Even in small disagreements, she’s quick to laugh them off and bring peace. She has taught me that relationships are far more important than pride. Maa is prayerful, selfless, and loving. Aside from being there for my mum, I’m so grateful for how she supported us through our journey to and after marriage. She has been there every step of the way — encouraging, advising, and praying with us. Both Kofi and I see her as our mother, and our children lovingly call her Grandma. Her love truly binds generations together. Maa, as you turn 80, we celebrate not just your years, but your heart. Thank you for being a blessing to us all. May God continue to fill your days with peace, strength, and laughter. We love you deeply — today and always. Freda Maame Nyarko Bampoe Abu & Family 106 The Birthday Journal
