Breaking New Ground AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH GHANA’S FIRST EMBRYOLOGIST About Ellis Fleischer-Djoleto e llis Fleischer-Djoleto is a seasoned Clinical Embryologist specialising in IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technologies. He holds a degree in Biological Science from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and trained at Gemienshafts Praxis-IVF Zentrum, Germany (1992–1994). With expertise in male infertility, blastocyst culture, egg donation, and surrogacy, he has worked in fertility clinics across Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and the UK. A certified ICSI practitioner and HPC-registered Clinical Scientist, Ellis worked at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (UK) and was the Clinical Embryologist who pioneered IVF in Ghana with Dr Joe Mainoo, establishing the first IVF centre at Pro Vita Hospital in 1993. His achievements include Ghana’s first IVF, ICSI, frozen embryo, first babies from donated eggs and sperm, blastocyst babies, as well as the first sets of twins and triplets. A founding partner of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine, Finney Hospital’s Assisted Conception Unit, and The Fertility Centrum, he is a member of ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology), ASRM (American Society of Reproductive Medicine), ACE-UK, and a founding member of GACE (Ghana Association of Clinical Embryologists).
