Dr Fanta

Eric Tweneboa, Sydney, Australia Prof.AugustusEduafo(popularlyknownasFanta)and I entered Swedru Secondary School (SWESCO) in 1972. We were in different boarding houses and class streams, knowing each other only faintly. In Form 4, we both chose Science subjects and became friends. Fanta switched to another gear in his study strategy topping almost all the subjects except Mathematics. At some point, he started memorizing most of the unfamiliar words in the Oxford English Dictionary, practicing his new vocabulary on us. At the General Certificate of Education (GCE)OrdinaryLevel examination, hewas the only student to achieve Grade 1, with Distinction, in our graduating 1977-year group. At school, Fanta would engage in intense but friendly arguments, particularly inmatters relating to Football (soccer).Hismainpartners incrime inthis regardwere John Aidoo and James Ebo Sey. It was during one of the school’s inter-house athletic competitions that he put on a paper sash across the back of his T-shirt with the inscription “Fantastic”. He did his best in almost all the track and field events but unfortunately could not make it to the School Athletics team; however, he won a lot of fans shouting Fanta!, Fanta!, Fanta!. Even though he was known as Fanta already, his exploits on the field that day heightened the fame of the name “Fanta” Fanta and some of us proceeded to do the GCE Advanced Level at SWESCO as the second batch of Sixth formers, and I shared the Prefects room in House 3with him. In 1979, only three of us entered the prestigious University of Ghana, Legon, with Fanta gaining admission into the Ghana Medical School to read Medicine. Fanta will go down in the history of SWESCO as the first true SWESCONIAN (GCE Ordinary and Advance Level student) to become a Medical Doctor. Our friendship continues even as we currently find ourselves on opposite sides of the globe. Fanta, you are great! Dr. Augustus Eduafo, you are generous!!
